Memos and Destination Tags
What they are
Every payment link carries a short reference so Brykto can tell your payments apart.
- On Stellar it is called a memo
- On the XRP Ledger it is called a destination tag
Two customers paying you the same amount on the same day look identical on the network. The reference is what separates them.
Your customer usually never sees it
When a customer taps the payment button or scans the QR code, the reference is already filled in. There is nothing for them to type and nothing for them to get wrong.
It only becomes visible when someone pays by hand, copying your address into an exchange or another wallet. The payment page shows the reference next to the address for exactly that reason.
When it goes missing
If a customer pays without the reference, the funds still reach you. They are in your wallet. Brykto simply cannot tell which link they belong to.
On Stellar, a payment with no memo is not matched. On the XRP Ledger, Brykto tries to match it by amount instead, which usually works. If you have two links open for the same amount, it can close the wrong one.
Either way the funds are yours. You can mark the link as paid to tidy up your records.
Telling customers what to do
Most customers never need to know any of this. If you have one paying from an exchange, tell them two things:
- Send the exact amount shown.
- Copy the reference into the memo or destination tag field.
Exchanges that cannot send a memo or tag are best avoided for this reason. Ask the customer to use a wallet app instead.
